Ripples in Reality The Physics Teacher Vol 54, No 7

In a deep and dark corner of space, a cataclysm loomed. Two cosmic nemeses circled one another, locked in a macabre dance of death. Unfolding over millennia, the deadly waltz began leisurely enough. But with the dance came radiation and the energy loss that it implies. Orbit after orbit, the distance between the two protagonists shrank as their grip on each other tightened.

In order to understand the mechanisms behind the emergence of superconductivity by the chemical pressure effect in REO0.5F0.5BiS2 (RE = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd), where bulk superconductivity is induced by the substitutions with a smaller-radius RE, we performed synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, and analyzed the crystal structure and anisotropic displacement parameters.

Development of a detector pair for very high frequency

Two such interferometers are constructed to perform cross-correlation analysis. The original signals at around 100 MHz are converted into electrical signals at lower frequencies before we collect the data. The output noise of each interferometer is measured to correspond to less than 110-16 Hz-1/2 in strain amplitude at around 100 MHz.
